Making dishes ahead of time for Thanksgiving can make the day so much easier, and learning how to reheat mashed potatoes can be a saving grace when you are working to simplify your Thanksgiving dinner.

Preparing the perfect mashed potatoes recipe is a necessary step to make the best holiday feasts, but there are ways to make prep so much easier. Whether you are trying to get ahead by making your Turkey Day potatoes a few days before or you have leftover mashed potatoes, we are breaking down all the ways to reheat your mashed potatoes. Can you reheat mashed potatoes in the microwave?

This isn’t our favorite method, but if the microwave is your go-to tool, then place your leftover potatoes in a glass or other microwave safe bowl, cover and cook on high for 1 minute. Stir potatoes, and repeat, stirring every minute until they are heated through (the repeated stirring is what ensures even reheating). If the potatoes feel thick, stir in a touch of extra milk or butter.

What about baking them?

Yes you can reheat mashed potatoes in the oven, but it requires a lot more time and yields a much drier final dish. If what you look forward to most is a luxurious and creamy mash to serve for your holiday dinner, preparing mashed potatoes ahead of time and reheating them in the oven will not result in a perfect potato, so we suggest you don't do it.

If you have it, we recommend using double boiler (or making one):

Whether reheating leftovers or using a recipe to make mashed potatoes ahead of time for a crowd, warming those spuds in a double boiler will do the trick. Alternatively, you can place your potatoes in a Pyrex glass bowl set over (but not in) simmering water. Cook, stirring occasionally, adding whole milk as necessary to adjust the consistency, until heated through, 15 to 25 minutes. This is the best way to ensure a creamy potato without any dryness.

Bonus: Once you know how to reheat mashed potatoes, if there are any leftovers at the end of the big meal, you'll be able to feast on warm mash well into the weekend. Beyond a creamy bowl of mashed potatoes, you can also use the mash in an epic Thanksgiving leftover recipe (mashed potato soup, anyone?).
