Hunan TV's "Singer" has been cancelled
28 Sep – The hit Hunan TV Chinese reality singing competition, "Singer" will not be renewed for another season.
As reported on Epoch Times, the news was shared by the show's producer Hong Tao through the Hunan TV conference, saying that there will be no "Singer 2021".
"Singer 2020 is the final season of the show," he added.
Based on the hit Korean show, "I Am A Singer", the Hunan TV programme became a great hit when it first premiered in 2013 - boasting a strong line-up of contestants that include Yu Quan, Terry Lin, Aska Yang, and Julia Peng.
The show continued to soar with top singers like GEM Tang, Coco Lee, Joey Yung, and Hacken Lee joining, as well as international stars including Malaysia's Shila Amzah, Korea's Hwang Chi-yeul, and British pop star Jessie J joining in season 2, 4 and 6 respectively.
However, the success began to dwindle beginning 2018, as the show failed to get more top stars to join the competition, including Eason Chan and Jacky Cheung - the latter who stated that he was perplexed as to how these great singers would let some of the judges - who didn't understand music - criticise their performances.
"If you participate in the competition, you have to learn to calculate. These are the things that I don't like. If singing is about making too much calculation, it is meaningless," he said.
