Humpback Whale Spotted Slapping Water With Tail Off Myrtle Beach Coast

A vacationer captured a humpback whale repeatedly slapping the water with its tail off the coast of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on December 24, 2021.

Sissy England said she was sitting on her balcony reading when she heard a loud splash close to shore and took out her binoculars to catch a closer look.

“It’s amazing. How lucky are we?” she is overheard saying in the video, as she and her husband watched the whale slap the water and spin in circles for about five minutes.

According to local media, the behavior is known as lobtailing, and might get rid of parasites or scare predators off. Credit: Sissy England via Storyful
