Humpback Whale Just Off Coast of Newfoundland Startles Boater

A humpback whale was spotted breaching the waters off the coast of Summerford, Newfoundland, on April 27, a rare sighting captured on video by a local resident.

Dwight Ings told Storyful that there’s often sightings of whales, seals, porpoises, and sometimes even polar bears in the area, but rarely so close to the shore.

“I’ve never witnessed a whale breaching this close to my watercraft before. It blew my mind. I was very amazed when I popped around the point and saw this giant humpback whale right in front of me!” he said. Credit: Dwight Ings via Storyful
