‘House of the Dragon’ Fends Off ‘Dahmer’ for Most In-Demand New Show | Chart

In this weekly data series powered by Parrot Analytics we look at the top breakout shows of the past week. Breakout shows are the most in-demand series that have premiered in the past 100 days.

There was a battle for the top spot on this week’s list of top new shows. Netflix’s latest hit, “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” had 50.2 times the average series demand for last week which put it remarkably close to the “House of the Dragon” (at 52.8 times this week), according to Parrot Analytics‘ data, which takes into account consumer research, streaming, downloads and social media, among other engagement.

While HBO’s “House of the Dragon” has been at the top of the chart for weeks now, Netflix’s “Dahmer” had all the right elements to make it a breakout hit with audiences. It’s the latest series in the highly successful dramatized true crime genre and was created by Ryan Murphy. It also has the potential to benefit from the usual seasonal bump in demand for scary content around October. Even more impressive was that “Dahmer” grabbed more audience attention this week than three current series in some of the biggest franchises — “Star Wars,” Marvel and “Lord of the Rings.”

With its first full week of data in since its premiere on Sept. 21, “Andor” has made it into the top three most in-demand new releases with 33.9 times the average series demand. “Andor’s” strong performance has vaulted it ahead of Disney+’s other recent series, “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” which has been a steady performer for the platform since its premiere in mid-August and has several weeks remaining in its first season. The success of these two series gives Disney+ two shows in the top five this week as it continues to leverage a strong pipeline of content from its two flagship franchises, Marvel and “Star Wars.”

Demand for Netflix’s anime “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” is holding up well. Despite dropping all of its episodes on Sept. 13, demand for the show has held steady for a second week. This could be an indicator that new audiences are discovering the show beyond the core fan base who binged it the first week and may have been fans of the video game on which it’s based.

Hulu’s “Reboot” premiered on Sept. 20 and has jumped up the ranking this week into ninth place. It had 19 times the average series demand and is scheduled to continue releasing episodes through Oct. 25. It remains to be seen if it can keep up its momentum in the weeks leading up to the finale.

It isn’t unheard for the streamer. Another comedy from Hulu, “Only Murders in the Building,” is a great example of how to pull fans in and build demand over the course of a season. It managed to progressively grow its demand each week leading up to its season one finale when it ended with a new high level of demand.
