1. Empty the Bins

Taking showers once or even twice a day is essential in Singapore’s hot and humid climate. Germs accumulate on your towels every time you use them, so change yours at least twice a week, or after every three uses.

3. Mop the Floor

In Singapore, where most of us don’t wear shoes at home, sticky floors with debris are a no-no. To keep your floors sparkling, it’s advisable to mop high-traffic areas at least once a week. If you vacuum and mop on the same day, vacuum before mopping.

4. Vacuum the Floor

Ideally, vacuuming should be done twice a week, particularly in areas where household members spend the most time (e.g. bedrooms, living room). 5. Clean the Kitchen Sink

Kitchen sinks can suffer from a build-up of micro-organisms from raw meat. It’s therefore important to clean yours at least once a week. You can use dish soap and water to do the job. If you’re dealing with a large amount of grease, you can first scrub the sink with a cut of lemon, sprinkled with salt.

6. Replace Kitchen Sponge

If you cook regularly, you might’ve noticed your sponges get dirty, greasy, and smelly very quickly. Bacteria and grime build on sponges, so change them every two weeks or even sooner once you find them unsanitary for scrubbing dishes.

Alternatively, you can turn to washable dishcloths or sponges that you can clean whenever they get too dirty. For washable dishcloths, you can pop them into a washing machine for a more thorough clean.

7. Change Your Bedsheets and Pillowcases

Germs accumulate on your bedsheets every time you sleep on them. In Singapore’s climate, it’s also likely you’re perspiring on your sheets every night, even if your air-con is turned on.

Change your bedsheets at least every month to keep your bed fresh.

8. Clean the Toilet and Bathrooms

Hence, you should clean your toilets and bathrooms at least once a week, or more often if there are more than two people using a single bathroom. Your tasks shouldn’t only be limited to wiping the toilet bowl and seat: scrub other areas in the toilet (e.g. floor, sink) too.

9. Clean Your Fridge

No matter how clean you try to keep it, the fridge will become grimy after a while as sauce spills, grease, and odour leave their marks. Every three to four months, clean out your fridge by removing all drawers and shelves and washing them in hot, soapy water.

Wipe off the walls and doors of the fridge with soap and water. Don’t forget to put your frozen food and items that must be kept cold into a cooler first.

10. Wash Curtains

Curtains absorb dust and, left unattended, can worsen the air quality in your home and lead to respiratory problems. They should therefore be cleaned at least every three to six months, depending on how dusty your area is, and how sensitive your household is to air quality.

11. Clean Windows

Cleaning your windows regularly not only allows more light to enter your home but also prevents damage. You should clean your windows every six to 12 months. You may want to clean them more often if you live in an area with high levels of dust and pollution.
