Horses leap over huge bonfires in Spanish festival

STORY: The event takes place in San Bartolome de Pinares every January 16, the eve of Saint Anthony's Day, Spain's patron saint of animals.

A hundred horses galloped through the small municipality's narrow cobble-stoned streets, which according to tradition, purifies the animals with the smoke and flames of the bonfires for the coming year.

Strong gusts of wind caused heavy smoke during the one-hour event, boosted by the large wet brooms that locals traditionally throw onto the fires.

Once the festival concluded, participants took advantage of the burning embers to cook their dinner.
