Home Security Camera Captures Fireball Flaring in Alabama Sky

The American Meteor Society said it received 111 reports of a fireball in the skies above Alabama, Georgia and surrounding states on November 1.

Footage recorded on a Nest camera at Jason Sears’s home in Birmingham shows the fireball flaring in the evening sky.

Citing Bill Cooke, from the NASA Meteoroid Environment Office, meteorologist James Spann said the fireball was caused by a “fragment of an asteroid”.

The fragment started burning about 51 miles above Jacksonville, Alabama, and disintegrated 20 miles above Eastaboga, according to Spann’s post. Credit: Jason Sears via Storyful
