Home and Away spoilers follow for UK and Australian viewers.

Some Home and Away fans were left disappointed after watching the show's most recent finale.

The Australian soap is well known for explosive end-of-season episodes, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, viewers didn't get the big-scale stunts they've come to expect.

Actress Lynne McGranger, who plays Irene Roberts on the show, has now defended the finale after criticism.

One fan commented on Instagram: "The worst season finale, boring, disappointing with no cliffhanger."

Lynne responded: "Gee so sorry Sebastian but a tinsy little pandemic kind of got in the way."

She also tweeted her reaction, praising everyone behind the scenes.

"Our cast and crew and [fire] writers, producers and directors have worked their bums off since the end of May with little or no respite," she wrote.

"So I think the final episode is a-freaking-mazing."

The episode left Colby with an uncertain future as he was approached by dangerous inmates in prison, while the possibility of a new romance for Jasmine was hinted at.

Viewers also saw Ziggy and Tane share a passionate night together, as well as catching a glimpse at Kieran's dark past.

When the show returns in 2021, fans will be treated to the return of Heath Braxton.

A teaser for the New Year storylines saw Dan Ewing's character make a brief return after previously being spotted filming with regular cast members Ethan Browne (Tane), Rob Kipa-Williams (Ari Parata) and Patrick O'Connor (Dean Thompson).

Home and Away returns to Channel 5 (UK) in January. The show airs on Channel 7 in Australia.
