Hollyoaks star Adam Rickitt speaks out on Kyle Kelly's depression storyline

From Digital Spy

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks' Darren Osborne has been seen struggling with depression, and it's something that Kyle Kelly has been able to spot due to his own personal battles.

In fact, viewers have seen that Kyle is also currently struggling with his mental health, and future episodes will show that Kyle is going to sink deeper and deeper into depression while his girlfriend Nancy remains oblivious.

As Kyle struggles to contain his emotions, it makes even the smallest of tasks difficult for him – let alone planning a wedding, like Kyle and Nancy are doing.

But as Kyle has been confiding in Darren about his mental health, the two are set to put aside their differences and try to help each other out, with Darren stepping in to try and help the wedding come together.

"It was a bit of shock," Kyle actor Adam Rickitt told Inside Soap of the storyline.

"The ex-husband of Kyle's soon-to-be-wife offering to help. I think Kyle's friendship with Darren becomes more of a crutch than it would normally, and they both help each other — it's sweet.

"Kyle's proud of himself and what he's achieved with the tasks, but he forgot to check the other side of list! So when Nancy goes, 'You forgot to send out the invitations', it breaks his heart a bit," he added.

Adam continued to say that he is proud of the Channel 4 soap for tackling the topic of depression, and added that he hopes it will encourage discussions in households across the UK.

"I think it's amazing, I genuinely do," he said. "It's something I've campaigned on for 20 years now – I think there are so many misconceptions on mental health."

"It's seen as a weakness, which it's really not. Every person on the planet is susceptible to having mental health issues," he continued.

"With our younger audience demographic, I really hope that it'll start a conversation, and that people become as aware about mental health as they are about physical health."

Hollyoaks airs Mondays-Wednesdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, and from April 6, it will air on Mondays and Tuesdays at 6.30pm. First-look episodes will air on E4 at 7pm.
