Tony and Diane Hutchinson are facing a serious marriage crisis in Hollyoaks.
It was only a few weeks ago when the couple were tearfully reunited in the hospital, with Diane promising to never "let anything bad happen" to her husband again after his ordeal with killer Breda.
But Tony (Nick Pickard) has since been grappling with PTSD over his experiences in the pig farm, having most recently asked his father Edward (Joe McGann) to fill in for him on a date night at the opera with his wife.
In Thursday's (February 6) first episode on E4, Diane (Alex Fletcher) confessed to Edward that she was growing impatient with Tony's seeming lack of commitment to their relationship.
Edward used this information to his advantage, since he still has feelings for Diane as well. The sinister doctor put pressure on his son to pull himself together or risk losing his wife forever.
Diane later asked Mandy Richardson (Sarah Jayne Dunn) for some advice about Tony, given that Mandy was involved with him all those years ago.
"When we lost Grace, I honestly think the hardest part was watching Tony," Mandy recalled. "It broke him, and the selfish part of me was so frustrated because I needed him, and he just wasn't there emotionally.
"He needs more than just one session with a psychologist. You need to get him back there. If you really want him to recover, proper professional help is the only way."
Having been ordered by his father to "man up", Tony surprised his wife with a candlelit dinner — and everything seemed to be back on track for the pair, until Diane accidentally banged the cupboards.
This sent Tony spiralling into a PTSD memory, as he yelled at his wife to stop. Diane again pleaded with Tony to go back to the hospital for some help with his PTSD, though he once again refused.
"I'm trying to man up and be a better husband," he insisted. "I'm sorry if that's not good enough for you… I'm not going back to that hospital again, alright?"
Tony's outburst sent Diane into the all too willing Edward's arms, with the doctor pretending to be a sympathetic shoulder to cry on as Diane made a shocking confession.
"I can't [persevere] because it's Tony who is broken," she admitted. "I have tried everything."
Diane had no idea that Tony was sitting in the next room and was heartbroken to hear that she was giving up on their marriage!
