Hollyoaks airs Kurt Benson's return in anniversary episode

From Digital Spy

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Jeremy Edwards has made his long-awaited return to Hollyoaks as the soap has revealed secrets about his character Kurt Benson's supposed death.

The original character was infamously killed off-screen in 1999, when his best mate Tony (Nick Pickard) heard that he'd died in a tragic jet ski accident.

Yet, Wednesday's (October 21) 25th episode opened with Jeremy shocking his pal by walking into The Hutch to reveal he'd been the one arranging a mysterious date for the past few days.

"Hello Tony," he said. "Ready for our date?"

Tony broke down in tears, explaining that it "broke his heart" to have to comfort Kurt's family as they buried him all those years ago.

Kurt then revealed that the person buried in his casket was actually "the guy who lived in the bunk above" him in the hostel, with whom he'd switched IDs when asked to identify the body.

"Twenty-one years of blaming myself for letting you go," Tony vented. "Twenty-one years of missing my friend I wanted to be like so badly it hurt. I can't walk past a dog without hoping I'd see ya.

"You dying was one of the worst days of my life, and I've had to carry that pain around ever since."

Kurt explained that he was finally "tired of running away", and wanted to come home at last. He explained that he always looked up to Tony, seeing him as a hero.

"However long this takes, I am going to make this up to you," he promised.

Tony's first demand was for Kurt to apologise to everyone he'd hurt, starting with Darren, Mandy and Cindy when they arrived at The Hutch.

"You're looking good for a dead bloke," Mandy declared.

Tony managed to smooth things over with his old friends, while Kurt urged him not to give up on his marriage to Diane.

"If I can come back from the dead, what's stopping you?" Kurt joked.

By the episode's end, Tony was spurred on by Yazz's proposal to Tom to make a new start in his own life as well.

"I thought I'd do what all heroes do: save the day, reclaim my throne and win back my girl," Tony told Kurt.
