Hollyoaks spoilers follow.
Liberty Savage's labour in Wednesday's (September 23) first-look Hollyoaks episode was soap's first socially-distanced birthing scene.
After Liberty (Jessamy Stoddart) experienced contractions earlier in the week, Misbah Maalik (Harvey Virdi) had to assist when Sienna (Anna Passey) and Brody (Adam Woodward) in turning the restaurant into a birthing theatre.
Liberty was understandably stressed from the start, ordering Sienna and Brody to rearrange the restaurant so it aligned with the proper feng shui for the birthing process.
Through the stress, Sienna and Brody supported Liberty as she delivered their baby — but panic set in when the child was silent in the seconds after being delivered.
"Why isn't she crying?" Sienna demanded to know.
A few seconds of terror thankfully gave way to relief when their daughter started crying, sending Liberty, Brody and Sienna into floods of tears.
"Congratulations," Misbah told them. "You've got yourselves a beautiful baby girl!"
However, Misbah suggested they run tests on the baby at the hospital to make sure there were no complications.
Later, at the hospital, Liberty confided in Misbah that the pain of birth was "worth it" in order to bring new life into the world — while Brody was furious that his lingering anger over his encounter with Buster prevented him from getting Liberty to the hospital on time.
"Brody, we all make poor decisions sometimes, just like we all worry that we're not going to be good enough as parents," Sienna assured him.
Telling him she had a "beautiful baby daughter" and a "brilliant dad", Sienna insisted: "I have everything I ever wanted."
Sienna would later visit Liberty with an update that tests indicated there's every chance the baby would have no complications from her difficult birth. But Sienna questioned if Liberty was feeling alright after all she went through.
"I haven't changed my mind, if that's what you're asking," she said. "Seeing you and Brody so happy, knowing I did that, it was worth every uncomfortable second."
However, the episode ended on an alarming note when Liberty realised that she'd started bleeding, sending Sienna frantically into the hospital halls calling for help.
Hollyoaks continues Mondays through Thursdays with first-look episodes at 7pm on E4, followed by repeat airings on Channel 4 the following evening at 6.30pm.
