Holland Taylor Says She Was ‘Overjoyed’ by Sarah Paulson’s Tony Win: ‘I Love Her So’

When Sarah Paulson won her Tony Award for ‘Appropriate,’ girlfriend Holland Taylor “just went crazy,” she recalled

Holland Taylor is celebrating her partner Sarah Paulson’s success.

The 81-year-old actress said she was “overjoyed” to watch Paulson, her girlfriend since 2015, win the 2024 Tony Award for best actress in a play on June 16.

“I just went crazy,” she recalled on the Friday, June 28 episode of TODAY with Hoda and Jenna. Before the ceremony, where Paulson, 49, was nominated for her work leading Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ drama Appropriate, Taylor confessed she was “very nervous because awards can turn out any old way.”

But, she told Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager, Paulson “certainly deserved it. I think it was the performance of the season and I know she wanted it. How can you not want to win the best actress Tony Award on Broadway? And I thought, ‘She’s just got to get it.’ I willed it and willed it and fortunately, it came true. I was overjoyed.”

She sweetly added, “I love her so.”

At the Tonys ceremony, the Morning Show star accompanied Paulson as her date. The pair appeared in coordinating couple style, with the American Crime Story Emmy winner in a custom white Prada gown featuring black sequin flowers, and Taylor in a simple black dress and emerald jewelry.

Paulson bested Betsy Aidem, Jessica Lange, Rachel McAdams and Amy Ryan in the Tony Awards’ leading play actress category. While she has starred in Broadway shows since 1994's The Sisters Rosensweig, this year marked Paulson’s first Tony nomination.

And while Appropriate is a family drama, Taylor was quick to point out how “goofy and crazy” her longtime partner is. “Talk about funny. People don’t realize how funny she is!”

Taylor — a stage veteran and Tony nominee herself for 2013’s Ann — is now starring Off-Broadway at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center in N/A, Mario Correa's play costarring Ana Villafañe. The political drama features Taylor as N, the first female speaker of the house, and Villafañe as A, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress — characters who bear a striking resemblance to U.S. House Representatives Nancy Pelosi and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“It sort of takes Nancy Pelosi and AOC as the kicking off point for the characters, but it’s really about the dialogue between them,” Taylor told Kotb and Bush Hager. “I got offered this play and I just had a shoulder replacement and thought, ‘I can’t do a play.’ And I got up to page 30 before I called my agent and said, ‘Whatever you have to do, make sure that I am in this play.’ ”

Taylor last starred on screen in Quiz Lady and Billions, while Paulson recently made appearances on Mr. and Mrs. Smith and The Bear.
