Holby City just dropped a major bombshell – hospital boss Max McGerry is in a relationship with returning neurosurgeon Guy Self.

John Michie has reprised his role as Guy, with spoilers revealing that he would be back in tonight's (April 7) episode.

However, further details of Guy's return story – and his involvement with established character Max – had been kept under wraps until transmission.

Tonight's trip to Holby saw recovering alcoholic Max (Jo Martin) come close to having a relapse following an emotional showdown with her son Louis, who has transitioned in the years he's spent away from his mum.

Struggling to process everything, Max was almost tempted back to booze – but soon had a much-needed wake-up call over what she was doing.

Unfortunately, Max then faced further challenges when she headed back to work, and both Ric and Ange questioned whether she was really in the right frame of mind to be there.

As Max continued to struggle, she was seen having a familiar conversation with an unknown person.

All soon became clear when Max later attended an AA group at the end of her shift, where she was accompanied by Guy, who was revealed to be her partner.

Guy, who was last seen in 2018, is back in Holby for a brief return stint, which will eventually see him return to work at the hospital.

Show bosses have already hinted that Guy's return won't be without its complications, with Ric named as one of the characters who'll be having his feathers ruffled.

Teasing Guy's comeback plot, actor John recently said: "I've really enjoyed the writing for Guy in these new episodes, and it's pretty 'out there' towards the end – quite dangerous and dramatic stuff.

"It's a 50/50 split. Some people are like, 'Oh God, what's he doing back?' then there are other people who quite like him and recognise his skills as a surgeon. He's a real Marmite character, isn't he?"

Holby City continues on Tuesday, April 14 at 8pm on BBC One.
