Highlights from Copenhagen Fashion Week for Spring 2021
In the midst of the global COVID-19 crisis, many citywide events were taken off the calendar. From film festivals to art biennials to the 2020 Olympics, large-scale spectacles have either been moved to a later date or transferred to online platforms so as to limit crowds and taper the spread of the virus. The Danish fashion industry, however, went ahead with business as usual.
“We strongly believe in the importance of being able to meet face to face,” said Cecilie Thorsmark, CEO of Copenhagen Fashion Week, to WWD in June. “Fashion week is inherently a physical event, which is why we [want] to gather industry professionals at our new hub and to create a fashion week that can help the industry to move ahead.”
Indeed, Copenhagen Fashion Week was in full swing, and some brands didn’t let the pandemic deter them from showcasing their collections. For three days starting on August 9, the city was buzzing with a number of runway presentations, parties, and exhibitions. The street style set was also out and about, posing for photographers. And though some designers opted for digital formats, the number of in-person experiences was palpable.
Ahead, we’ve rounded up three highlights from Copenhagen Fashion Week.
“GANNI 202020 Exhibition”
In lieu of a runway presentation, Ganni unveiled an art exhibition that enlisted seven creatives positing what the upcoming decade will be like. Some of the standout works included artist Hayley Blomquist’s hand-knitted wall sculpture, which was made from Levi’s deadstock denim; an installation of life-size cutouts by photographer Rosie Marks; and a dance film by choreographer Maria “Decida” Wahlberg.
“This year feels like a decade in itself,” said Ditte Reffstrup, creative director of Ganni. “It’s been a roller coaster, but despite everything we are still motivated by the new roads ahead and what we have learnt so far. Doing what we do best, we have surrounded ourselves with amazing talent from near and far, growing new friendships and collaborations.”
Also on hand was a kiosk that offered Ganni’s upcycled collection with Levi’s, which acted as a preview for Love Letter, a program that allows customers to rent denim pieces and enforce sustainability.
The Fashion Café
Located at the Villa Copenhagen hotel, the Fashion Café served as a hub for all the creatives and attendees at Copenhagen Fashion Week. The venue offered breakfasts and activities, including Meet the Nordics, a forum that connected designers with press, buyers, and influencers; and The Jewellery Room, a showcase of the best baubles from Danish designers.
Nynne Spring 2021 Collection
In 19 looks presented on Copenhagen Fashion Week’s online platform, designer Nynne Kunde celebrated the best of Denmark. Indeed, the clear-blue and sunflower-yellow hues reflected the Danish countryside in summer. The pronounced shoulders and full skirts payed homage to traditional Scandinavian garb. And the clean, structural lines concisely captured the nation’s modern art scene. Effervescent and artful, the entire collection certainly lived up to its name, Walking Soft Sculpture.
