High Winds and Rough Surf Reach Nicaragua's Corn Islands as Hurricane Iota Approaches

Rough surf and high winds lashed Nicaragua’s Corn Islands on November 16, as Hurricane Iota approached landfall, local authorities said.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) upgraded the storm to a Category 5 hurricane as of approximately 10 am, eastern time. The NHC warned of “catastrophic winds, life-threatening storm surge, and torrential rainfall” in Central America and particularly the coast of Nicaragua, which was forecast to receive the brunt of the storm.
