Authorities in Louisiana are investigating the deaths of a young couple whose bodies were found fatally shot on a highway over the weekend.
Dashayla Ardoin, 17, of Mamou, La., was found dead alongside 21-year-old Glenkeithan Robertson, of Opelousas, La., by responding authorities on Saturday, Oct. 12, along a highway in Acadia Parish, local police confirm to PEOPLE.
“From the investigation, this case is believed to be a murder / suicide,” the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office said in their statement on Monday.
Sheriff KP Gibson tells PEOPLE it's believed Robertson was the shooter, but he could not comment on any apparent motive behind the killings.
The couple were on their way to Mamou, police said, and their bodies were found about 7 p.m. in the evening. Mamou High School, where Ardoin was a student, was hosting its homecoming that evening, per the school’s Facebook page. Gibson tells PEOPLE that given the route of their trip, it is believed the couple were possibly headed to homecoming festivities.
In a tribute posted online, Mamou High School said the community is mourning “one of our own.”
