Risk-free glam that you and your skin will enjoy.
We all love playing around with makeup, but how many times have you woken up to a freshly formed blemish after a day's worth of wearing a full beat? Chances are, one day too many. And if you have sensitive skin, certain ingredients can cause flare-ups and create an even worse situation. Well, you can leave those issues in the past with non-comedogenic makeup.
So, what separates non-comedogenic makeup from its cosmetic counterparts? "Non-comedogenic makeup allows the skin to breathe," says Elina Fedotova, cosmetic chemist, celebrity esthetician, and owner of Elina Organics Spas. "It does not contribute to excessive oil formation in the skin and does not create a greenhouse effect by clogging the pores with synthetic, petroleum-based ingredients and heavy oils. In other words, it is light, breathable, and usually a water-based formulation."
According to Fedotova, people with oily, combination, and/or acne-prone complexions would benefit from switching over to non-comedogenic makeup due to most options containing zinc oxide as the main pigment. "Zinc oxide helps to kill pathogens and has a soothing and calming effect on the skin as well as reduces breakouts and absorbs excessive oil," she says.
If you're looking to go down the non-comedogenic route with your makeup, Fedotova suggests steering clear of certain ingredients. "You need to make sure that non-comedogenic makeup is completely free of heavy oils like mineral oil, avocado oil, as well as silicone-based ingredients like dimethicone and other ingredients that end in 'cone,'" she says. "It must be a water-based formulation with no petroleum-based ingredients."
