Everything You Need to Know About Matt James Ahead of ‘The Bachelor’
After months of waiting, Matt James’s season of The Bachelor is premiering on ABC. Like, tonight! Right now! It’s finally happening!
Matt is making history as the franchise’s first Black Bachelor on a season that seems much more focused on diversity and representation—so there’s a lot to be excited about. And while this is Matt’s first time starring on a Bachelor franchise show, he’s been on the radar of fans for a while now thanks to his close friendship with Tyler Cameron. But the time has come to dig a little deeper. Deep, like my love for Matt.
He’s, Like...Legit an Amazing Person
Matt works in real estate, but he also founded ABC Food Tours, which takes kids in underserved NYC communities on tours of restaurants around the city to educate, motivate, and inspire them. “My favorite part of running ABC is working with kids!” Matt says. “They’re at an age where they’re super impressionable. No one is born racist or rude—these are all traits that are acquired through influence and experience. If you can positively influence these students at this age, you can potentially change the course of their lives. Also, I love seeing our students try new foods!”
He and Tyler Quarantined Together...With Hannah Brown
Over the summer, Matt moved into Tyler Cameron’s house along with Hannah Brown and started creating content on TikTok under the username @TheQuarantineCrew.
Matt and Tyler have actually been friends forever and met back in college when they were on the Wake Forest University football team. When they’re not chilling in Florida, they live together in NYC.
He’s a Successful Influencer
Matt has more than 500k followers as of writing this article, and he’s already working with brands like American Express and Delta.

His Ex Is Gonna Be on The Bachelor
Before signing up to be the next Bachelor, Matt was in a relationship with his ex-girlfriend Madison Nelson. There’s even photo evidence:

And apparently Madison is making an appearance this season on The Bachelor, although there’s no word on how far she makes it just yet.
He’s Super Close to His Mom
Matt called his mom his “inspiration” during an interview with Wake Forest Magazine, and Tyler has also talked about how close they are. “You’re going to look for someone who resembles his mother,” he said. “His mother is one of the sweetest ladies: very lovely, very willing to help and serve others in the community and someone that’s ready to get on the ground and change the world. That’s what Matt’s going to do—he’s going to change the world.”
Matt hasn’t opened up about his dad, but hopefully, we’ll learn more about his family during The Bachelor, so stay tuned!
