Hundreds of drivers were stranded on Interstate 95 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, for hours on January 3 and 4 after severe weather left the highway blocked by "disabled vehicles and downed trees,” the Virginia Department of Transportation said.
The VDOT said on Tuesday that a number of roads were still closed due to “major incidents” involving disabled or crashed tractor trailers. Travel was expected to remain hazardous for most of Tuesday, the VDOT warned.
Virginia Gov Ralph Northam tweeted: “An emergency message is going to all stranded drivers connecting them to support, and the state is working with localities to open warming shelters as needed.”
