Heavy Police Presence in Lima as Protests Continue in Peru

Officers from Peru’s National Police blocked off streets in Lima, as protests across the county continued on Wednesday, January 25.

This footage, filmed by Luis Natera shows a large police presence along Av. Abancay in the country’s capital, blocking off the street with metal barricades.

According to local reports officers blocked off the road so that protesters wouldn’t reach the congress.

Demonstrations have rocked Peru since former president Pedro Castillo was ousted after he tried to dissolve the opposition-controlled congress ahead of an impeachment vote. Supporters of the former president demand Castillo’s successor, Dina Boluarte, to resign, and to reinstate Castillo. Credit: Luis Natera via Storyful
