'You Can Hear It Cracking' - Ice Forms on Lake Superior

Sheets of ice formed over Lake Superior, on the shores of Ashland, Wisconsin, amid cold weather conditions in the region this week.

Local photographer Cheryl Koval captured footage along the water, posting footage to YouTube on December 15, showing ice on top of the water, but it was the sound that really caught Koval’s attention.

“This is cool,” she told Storyful, “you can kinda hear the ice cracking on the bay as ice starts to take over Lake Superior.”

Just days prior, Koval shared footage of a collection of striking icicles along the shores of the Great Lake. Credit: Cheryl Koval via Storyful
