Health Ministry: Malaysia records 1,285 new Covid-19 cases, with Selangor top once again

KUALA LUMPUR, April 8 — There were 1,285 new Covid-19 infections and four deaths from the coronavirus in Malaysia over the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health (MoH) said today.

In a statement, its director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said out of the total number of cases today, 17 cases were imported, bringing the total number of cumulative cases to 355,753 since the pandemic arrived in Malaysia early last year.

In terms of states, Selangor topped the list of new daily cases with 374, followed by Sarawak (212) and Penang (162).

Other states that also reported infections are Kuala Lumpur (120), Sabah (106), Johor (101), Kelantan (87), Kedah (31), Perak (24), Putrajaya (19), Negri Sembilan and Pahang (12 each), Melaka and Pahang (11 each), Labuan (three) and Perlis (one).

Meanwhile, Putrajaya detected four new clusters in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of active clusters to 348.

Of the new clusters announced today, three were detected at workplaces, while the remaining was spread within the community.

“The clusters with the highest increase in new cases today are the Penjara Jalan Harapan cluster (89 cases), Perusahaan Perai Tiga cluster (60 cases) and Industri Parit Raja cluster (38 cases),” he said, while also confirming that 10 clusters ended today.

Dr Noor Hisham said 186 patients require intensive care, including 81 on ventilators.

Another 1,175 people have fully recovered and been discharged as of today, giving the country 340,242 cumulative recoveries.

The latest Covid-19 deaths were all locals with various medical conditions, such as diabetes, stroke, high-blood pressure and severe kidney problems.
