Health Ministry: Malaysia’s daily Covid-19 cases near 18,000 mark today
KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Malaysia saw a new all-time high for the most Covid-19 daily infections in 24 hours, with the Health Ministry recording 17,786 cases today.
Its director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this brings the total number of confirmed infections in the country to 1,113,272 since the start of the pandemic.
The previous record was set on Thursday (July 29) at 17,405 cases.
“Selangor remains the state or Federal Territory with the highest number of infections at 6,400 cases today for a cumulative total of 407,419, followed by Kedah with 1,389 cases today and a total of 45,631, and KL Federal Territory with 1,962 cases today and a total of 123,027,” he said in a statement.
Of today’s figures, nine were import cases in which the infection occurred abroad, including five Malaysians and four foreign citizens. The remaining 17,777 domestic cases include 15,151 Malaysians and 2,626 foreign citizens.
The latest clinical statistics indicate that 260 cases or 1.5 per cent of the 17,786 cases today fall in Categories Three, Four, and Five, while 17,526 cases or 98.5 per cent fall in Categories One and Two.
“Currently, there are 189,609 active cases in the country. Similarly, the ministry has also detected the emergence of 28 new Covid-19 clusters in Malaysia today.
“This brings the total number of clusters detected to 3,679, of which 2,573 have been deemed to have ended, leaving 1,106 clusters still active,” Dr Noor Hisham said.
The 28 clusters include 13 workplace-related clusters, 12 community clusters, and one religious cluster, one high-risk group cluster, and one detention centre cluster.
All the clusters are concentrated in Sabah, Sarawak, KL Federal Territory, Johor, Selangor, Perak, Kelantan and Kedah.
“Today also sees 11,718 recoveries from Covid-19, bringing the total number of recoveries to 914,639 cases or 82.2 per cent of the cumulative number of cases.
“Similarly, 1,062 cases are being treated in Intensive Care Units, of which 534 require breathing assistance. A total of 165 deaths from Covid-19 were also recorded, bringing the nationwide fatality rate to 9,024 cases, or 0.81 per cent of the cumulative number of cases,” he said.
The deceased include 155 Malaysians and 10 foreign citizens. Of this number, 52 were in Selangor, 30 in Johor, 23 in Negri Sembilan, 18 in Kedah, nine in Sabah and KL Federal Territory respectively, seven in Penang, four in Melaka, three in Perak, Terengganu, and Sarawak respectively, two in Pahang, and one in Kelantan and Perlis respectively.
Approximately 139 of the fatalities had medical histories consisting of various ailments, while 12 of the fatalities were reported as being brought in dead.
