Health D-G: Malaysia records 5,151 new Covid-19 infections today

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — The Health Ministry reported 5,151 new Covid-19 infections today.

This brings the cumulative infections in the country to 673,026 cases.

“Selangor recorded the highest number of cases at 1,914, followed by Negri Sembilan at 607, Sarawak at 570 and Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur at 480,” said Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a Twitter update.

Case numbers were also high in states such as Johor which recorded 392 cases, Kedah at 228 and Kelantan at 280 cases.

Dr Noor Hisham said that out of the 5,151 new cases today, only three were imported into the country from overseas.

He added that 73 deaths were also recorded in the past 24 hours and that 924 Covid-19 patients are currently being treated in intensive care units (ICU), with 453 of them needing the help of ventilators to help them breathe.

“Of the 73 deaths today, 33 of them involve cases in Selangor, six each in Kuala Lumpur, Kedah, Negri Sembilan and Sarawak, four in Labuan, three each in Sabah, Melaka and Johor, two in Pahang and one in Kelantan,” he said.

He added that 19 more Covid-19 clusters were identified in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of active clusters in the country to 788.

On a brighter note, Dr Noor Hisham shared that 7,240 people have recovered from the deadly disease.

This brings the total number of recoveries from Covid-19 in Malaysia to 600,935, or 89.3 per cent.
