HBO Could Tie Emmy Record With ‘Succession,’ ‘House of the Dragon,’ ‘The Last of Us’ and ‘The White Lotus’

HBO wants to be on top this Emmy season, and they might do it with their slate of drama series contenders.

Four juggernaut series are among its hopefuls — the fantasy prequel “House of the Dragon” with Emmy D’Arcy and the dystopian video game adaptation “The Last of Us” with Pedro Pascal. In addition, Mike White’s “The White Lotus,” subtitled “Sicily,” was moved to the drama races after sweeping the limited categories for its first season (and returning with the character Tanya, played by Jennifer Coolidge).

And of course, the reigning champ, “Succession” with its all-star ensemble, seeks recognition for its fourth and final season.

With the network coming off celebrating its 50th anniversary, if these early projections are accurate, and the four shows land noms for the network, it would tie the record held by NBC since 1992.

It was 31 years ago when the broadcast network received drama series noms for “I’ll Fly Away,” “L.A. Law,” “Law & Order” and “Quantum Leap.” But surprisingly, CBS’s “Northern Exposure” was the ultimate winner and walked away for the show’s third season. Victorious. Notably, NBC achieved the feat when only five slots were available versus the eight that will be open this year.

It’s been a time of change for HBO, coming with the Warner Bros and Discovery merger, but one thing that doesn’t is the yearning for awards recognition.

Less likely, but still on the roster, HBO will also submit “His Dark Materials,” “Industry,” “Perry Mason” and the previously nominated “Westworld,” which was canceled in November 2022.

Emmy Nominations voting runs from June 15-26. The Primetime Emmy nominations will be announced on July 12. Check back every Thursday for the latest updates. All information is preliminary and is subject to change.
