Kate Bishop is the first woman to adopt the Hawkeye moniker after an attack in Central Park spurs her to train in combat.

She joins the Young Avengers and then takes on original Hawkeye Clint Barton — played in the MCU by Jeremy Renner — as a mentor

Steinfeld has long been rumoured to take up the role of the beloved character, but Marvel has not officially confirmed the casting as yet.

The Hawkeye series will be set following the events of Avengers: Endgame, and is expected to see Clint Barton hand over the mantle to Kate Bishop.

Marvel has also confirmed that the series will delve more into Clint’s persona as violent vigilante Ronin, into whom he transformed after losing his family in The Snap — as seen in the opening of Endgame.

Mad Men writer Jonathan Igla will serve as showrunner and head writer for the series, with Saturday Night Live’s Rhys Thomas and filmmaking duo Bert & Bertie among the roster of directors.

Renner confirmed the start of filming in New York with a tweet from the set, but stopped short of officially revealing who will be appearing alongside him as Kate Bishop.

Steinfeld burst on to the scene in the Coen Brothers’ 2010 remake of True Grit, securing an Oscar nomination for her work, and went on to appear in the Pitch Perfect franchise.

She also played the lead human role in the critically acclaimed Transformers spin-off movie Bumblebee in 2018.

Hawkeye is one of several MCU shows currently being made for Disney+, including Loki and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, as well as an upcoming live-action debut for She-Hulk.

First out of the blocks will be the reality-bending WandaVision, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as their characters from the Avengers films.

That show is due to debut via Disney+ on January 15, 2021.
