Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and her mother Doria Ragland were involved in a “near catastrophic” car chase after being followed by paparazzi, their spokesperson has revealed.

The chase took place after Meghan and Harry had attended an awards ceremony in New York on Tuesday.

The spokesperson said: “Last night, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms. Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi. This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD officers. While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone’s safety.”

“Dissemination of these images, given the ways in which they were obtained, encourages a highly intrusive practice that is dangerous to all in involved,” the spokesperson added.

The New York Police Department said in a statement emailed to Variety: “On Tuesday evening, May 16, the NYPD assisted the private security team protecting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. There were numerous photographers that made their transport challenging. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at their destination and there were no reported collisions, summonses, injuries, or arrests in regard.”

Harry and Meghan were attending the Ms. Foundation for Women’s 2023 Women of Vision Awards. The event honored Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, grantee partners Wanda Irving of Dr. Shalon’s Maternal Action Project and Kimberly Inez McGuire of URGE, as well as activists LaTosha Brown, Olivia Julianna, and Rebekah Bruesehoff for their impact on the gender justice movement.

Meghan said at the event: “It’s never too late to start. You can be the visionary of your own life. There is still so much work to be done.”

Harry’s mother, Lady Diana, died in a car crash in 1997. It was speculated at the time that the crash was the result of a chase by paparazzi, but that was later called into question.

Harry and Meghan stepped away from their royal roles and moved from the U.K. to the U.S. to avoid media harassment.
