The flashback episode was part of Stunt Week on Favourites, as popular cast member Kieron Richardson teased that some of the "most-loved characters" would face "mortal danger" at the hands of Mac Nightingale.
The 2017 episode dealt with the aftermath of Hunter McQueen (Theo Graham) rushing to find Neeta Kaur (Amrit Maghera), after she'd been bailed from jail.
The young couple faced yet more heartbreak as Neeta broke the news that she could never be with Hunter because of Mac's (David Easter) constant interference — and little did she know how right she was.
Mac soon spotted her on campus and pulled her into the boiler room, where he unknowingly knocked loose a valve on the heating system when he punched the boiler in frustration.
All hell broke loose when Neeta defiantly showed Mac the drawing Hunter had made of the two of them. Mac then snatched it away and lit it on fire.
But his actions set off a chain reaction as a massive explosion ripped through the school because of the valve Mac had loosened. The episode left off with many characters' lives hanging in the balance…
Sadly, it was Neeta who wouldn't survive the explosion. Villainous Mac got rid of her once and for all when he let her drop from the wreckage, sending Neeta to her fiery doom.
At the time of her character's shocking death, Amrit Maghera admitted that she had a "complex mix" of feelings about leaving Hollyoaks.
"It feels sad and weird when you've been on a show for two years and your time there finishes, but it's also exciting because I'm getting back out into the world again," she told Digital Spy at the time.
"I made such good friends on Hollyoaks and it was such a lovely place to work. It was sad to leave and I was very emotional on my last day!"
Another death was also set up in Thursday's Hollyoaks Favourites episode. Frankie Osborne (Helen Pearson) was torn between husband Jack (Jimmy McKenna) and her old lover Johnno Dean (Colin Wells).
With Jack questioning whether Frankie was grappling with feelings for her ex, she stunned him by demanding "distance" because she was still distraught by his admission to killing a man when he was 15.
The couple would reconcile when Jack was saved from the rubble of the school explosion, but tragedy struck only weeks later when Frankie collapsed at home from a stroke and passed away suddenly.
Hollyoaks airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first-look episodes airing on E4 at 7pm. Wednesdays through Fridays on E4 will feature classic episodes called Hollyoaks Favourites to compensate for the soap suspending filming.
