  • The palace has confirmed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will no longer use their HRH titles.

  • Fans are wondering what it could mean for the brand as the couple trademarked 'Sussex Royal' earlier this year.

A lot can change in a fortnight, as we've all learnt recently. Two weeks ago, we all thought Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were tucked up in Frogmore Cottage, feeling refreshed after some time away from their royal schedules. Since then, they've announced their plan to step down as senior royals, and the Queen shared a statement explaining that they'll lose their HRH titles.

So, what does that all mean for their brand, Sussex Royal? An application to trademark the name was published on the intellectual property office website just before Christmas 2019, and Harry and Meghan also submitted applications for a number of items and services including clothing, which covers sportswear, dresses, headbands and jackets. Fans presumed they'd be releasing merch, but apparently the "future of the brand is still being discussed".

While some reporters think it could mean the end of the brand, others believe it will only help strengthen the name. And despite losing their HRH status, the couple will still have titles: Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Harry, who was born a prince of Wales, will remain a prince.

What is definitely clear is that the royal family are taking things one step at a time and handling the situation as delicately as they can - which means we'll just have to wait and see what comes next.
