Handout video shows man rescued from Donetsk rubble

STORY: Rescue workers helped the man out from beneath the wreckage, the video showed, before carrying him on a stretcher towards a van in the Donetsk town of Chasiv Yar.

More than 20 people were feared to be trapped under the rubble of the destroyed apartment block in eastern Ukraine, which was hit by a Russian rocket attack in the night, killing at least 18 people, officials said.

The five-storey building was struck by rockets late on Saturday (July 9), the officials said.

The emergency services said rescuers were in verbal contact with two people under the rubble.

Russia, which says it is conducting a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine, denies deliberately attacking civilians.

Luhansk and Donetsk provinces comprise the Donbas, Ukraine's eastern industrial region that has become Europe's biggest battlefield for generations. Russia wants to wrest control of the Donbas on behalf of the separatists that it supports.

Ukraine and the West call Moscow's invasion an unprovoked war of aggression.
