England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton has tested positive for Covid-19 so she will miss Wednesday’s European Championship quarter-final versus Spain.

The Football Association have said that the Aston Villa player will be “monitored regularly with a view to returning to the squad as soon as possible”.

Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman tested positive for Covid-19 before their 5-0 win over Northern Ireland on Friday. She may also be absent from the dugout on Wednesday night.

England have a new hero in the form of phenomenal Arsenal star Beth Mead

On Monday the Dutchwoman watched training from a distance with a mask on.

Twice-capped Hampton, who has been on the bench for England’s three Euros games so far, is the second player in the squad to test positive for the virus during the campaign, with defender Lotte Wubben-Moy having also done so before missing the second match, against Norway.

Alessia Russo stated after the victory over Northern Ireland that she “enjoys every game” she plays for England:

“I enjoy every game in an England shirt and to come on and score is great. I just got in the right place at the right time, and was able to put it in the back of the net,” Russo said (via BBC Sport).

“I should have finished that last one but we will move on to the next game. I’ve been watching Ian Wright’s goals this week and maybe that helped me. Obviously I want to play in every game for England but I know I have to be patient.”

Fran Kirby also reacted post-match, saying that she is “really happy” to open her account for the tournament:

“I’ve been wanting to get a goal through the tournament and have been getting myself in good positions bit it hasn’t come off for me. Luckily today I was in the right place and I got good contact on the ball and it was one of those you’re watching to see if it goes in so when it did I was just really happy to open my account.

“We spoke before the game about having a positive start, we felt our starts in the previous two games had been a bit slow so we wanted to make sure we got good possession of the ball and looked after it and I felt we did that even though the goal didn’t quite come. I’m just happy it went in and got the ball rolling and it just relaxed us and we could play the game a bit more.”
