Halifax police charge 2 youths with 2nd-degree murder in teen stabbing
Two 14-year-olds have been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in relation to the homicide of Ahmad Al Marrach at a Halifax mall.
According to a news release, Halifax Regional Police and RCMP arrested the two teenagers in Sackville on Wednesday night.
They are scheduled to appear in Halifax youth court Friday.
The 16-year-old victim was found injured as a result of a stabbing in a parking lot next to the Halifax Shopping Centre just before 5 p.m. Monday. Police said the teen was taken to hospital, where he died.
Officers arrested two 16-year-olds shortly after a wounded Al Marrach was found in the parking lot. On Tuesday, police said those youths were later released without charges.
Police said they're still investigating the relationship between the accused and the victim. Investigators do not believe there are any other suspects.
The arrests came on the same day as a police presence at three Sackville-area schools. RCMP said there were reports of a potential threat circulating on social media.
Al Marrach came to Canada from Syria eight years ago and was a student at Citadel High School in Halifax. He was remembered at a wake and funeral prayer on Wednesday at Kearney Lake Masjid.
