Hailey Baldwin On How She and Justin Bieber Will Raise Their Future Kids to be Anti-Racist

From ELLE

Hailey Baldwin, Justin Bieber's wife of one year, isn't pregnant or imminently starting a family with him. But it's something they both want in the future, and the couple have already been giving careful thought to how they want to raise their future children to be anti-racist.

Baldwin opened up about her thoughts on the matter in a new interview with Vogue India. For her, this summer's Black Lives Matter protests over racial inequality and police brutality were major wake up call as she examined her life and experiences as a white woman. “It was time to look inside and reflect: what do I not know, what do I need to ask, how can I step up and do the best that I can to be an ally in the Black Lives Matter movement?” she said.

She asserted that any children she has will be raised differently: “They will be raised knowing how to treat people, why we don’t say certain things, and why we respect and acknowledge and give credit where credit is due."

Baldwin has used her social media throughout the summer to raise awareness and call for justice following the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. She has also regularly posted information about the primaries, urging her followers to vote.

In May, she posted her first extended statement about the Black Lives Matter movement. "It’s heartbreaking that we’re honoring yet another life that was lost due to the violence and racism our country displays far too often," she wrote of Floyd. "To say that racism is alive today would be a gross understatement, and to say that white privilege doesn’t exist is ignorance at its finest."

"We live in a country that denies the same freedom and rights to someone based on the color of their skin... black men, women and children are being MURDERED because of the color of their skin while white men, women and children majority of the time receive a slap on the wrist at best," she continued. "I am tired, I’m angry, I’m sad, and I will not stay quiet. Changes need to be made, and people need to be behind bars for their actions.. Rest In Peace George Floyd."
