1. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MANCHESTER CITY MANAGER, PEP GUARDIOLA, SAYING:

"But all the leagues around the world except this league, maybe because it likes to be different, accept the five (substitutes) to protect the players, to protect the football, to protect the physicality playing every three games because the situation is unusual. It's different. And that's why I'm still surprised, I don't understand."

"I don't understand what benefit is three or five? The show must go on. It is not to play games or take an advantage one against one. It's to protect the players. It's too much because the previous season it finished later, it was different, it was exceptional and the situation today is exceptional and all the leagues around the world understand the situation, except here."

5. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MANCHESTER CITY MANAGER, PEP GUARDIOLA, SAYING:

"In our business, protect my business, protect my players, it's only I want. To be fit, no injuries, and when they arrive the day after to the training session or the day before the training session they are exhausted. I have to lift it because they are not human beings to stay in during three or four season. LeBron James won the NBA title. Now he is going to stay in the NBA, he will be on holidays. One month, two month, three month. These guys have how many days? Two weeks? And now they have games, games, games because BT, Sky and everyone else decide to do it. It's okay, it happen. Again, Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Rafa Benitez period. It's just the same and nothing change. For the important managers who was in that moment they change, they're going to change now with Juergen (Klopp) and myself? Of course not. Or Ole (Gunnar-Solskjaer)? Of course not. But when everyone know around the world the situation is exceptional for the pandemic situation, the virus is still here and all around the world, in Germany, in Spain, in Italy - it's five substitutions. Here? Three. And today, for that reason (Trent) Alexander-Arnold is injured maybe one month, one month and a half."

STORY: Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, criticised the Premier League on Sunday (November 8) for not introducing a five substitute rule and warned the decision would lead to more injuries.

The Spaniard's comments came after a 1-1 draw against title rivals Liverpool, who saw their full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold removed from the game due to injury.

Guardiola said he could not understand why the Premier League had not followed other major leagues in continuing the five substitution rule it introduced temporarily at the end of the 2019-2020 season. Instead, it returned to the usual three substitutions.

The City manager said his priority was to 'protect' his players from injury.

The later start to the 2020-2021 season, caused by the delay in the completion of last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has led to a more compressed schedule, especially for teams in the Champions League.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp was also vocal on Sunday in his criticism of the Premier League's decision not to stick with last year's temporary rule allowing five instead of three substitutions.
