  • Elon Musk and Grimes welcomed their baby boy, X Æ A-12 Musk, in early May 2020.

  • Grimes revealed on Instagram that they'd been forced to change their son's name already.

  • The change is due to California regulations regarding which characters can be used in names.

Grimes and Elon Musk certainly chose a memorable name for their son, but the unusual moniker has already undergone some changes.

In the comments of one of her Instagram posts, Grimes was asked whether she had been forced to change her baby's name due to California law. The musician replied in the comments, "X Æ A-Xii." Later, Grimes clarified, "Roman numerals. Looks better, tbh."

TMZ called the baby's original name "illegal" in California, but it seems that X Æ A-12 simply isn't valid. As attorney David Glass told People, "In California, you can only use the '26 characters' of the English language in your baby name." Glass continued, "Thus, you can’t have numbers, Roman numerals, accents, umlauts, or other symbols or emojis. Although an apostrophe, for a name like 'O'Connor,' is acceptable." So, technically, the Grimes' son has the same name, it's just styled differently.

Grimes previously revealed the meaning behind her son's name. The singer tweeted:

•X, the unknown variable

•Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence)

•A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent

X Æ A-Xii is Grimes' first child, and Musk's sixth.
