The chief executive of a Greenland hotel where Donald Trump Jr. hosted a lunch in for MAGA supporters has claimed that the attendees did not actually know who Don Jr. was and were just looking for a free lunch.

“[Trump Jr.] had just met them in the street and invited them for lunch, or his staff did. But I don’t think they knew who they were inviting,” Jørgen Bay-Kastrup, the chief executive of Hotel Hans Egede in Nuuk, Greenland, told the Guardian in an interview published Thursday.

“That of course was a little bit strange to us because we saw guests that we have never seen in our hotel before — and will probably never see again because it’s out of their economical means,” he continued, with the Guardian noting that he described many of the attendees as “homeless.”

There were reportedly around 15 guests who ate a traditional Greenlandic meal including fish and caribou. Bay-Kastrup added that the group were not Trump supporters and instead, “They were just, ‘Hey, somebody invited us for lunch, let’s go and join him. I think they found out later who it was.”

Don Jr.’s friend, political operative Arthur Schwartz, denied the claims when asked for comment by the Guardian and described them as “beyond the pale ridiculous.”

“Do you think Donald Trump Jr was wandering around Greenland inviting homeless people… to lunch, or do you realize that the suggestion sounds so beyond the pale ridiculous that you should feel stupid even asking the question,” Schwartz told the outlet.

“There were cameras following him around from the second he got there to the second he left. Did they miss him recruiting homeless people… to his homeless person… lunch?” A representative for Don Jr. and Hotel Hans Egede did not immediately respond to the Daily Beast’s request for comment.

During the lunch, the group all donned MAGA hats and President-elect Donald Trump even made an appearance through speakerphone where he told his supposed Greenlandic fans: “We’re going to treat you well,” per the Guardian.

Don Jr.’s Greenland visit came on the heels of his father describing it as an “absolute necessity” to acquire the island and refusing to rule out economic or military force to seize it.

“No, I can’t assure you on either of those two,” Trump told New York Times journalist David Sanger when asked if he could “assure the world” that he won’t be using “military or economic coercion” to seize control of Greenland and the Panama Canal at a news conference in Mar-a-Lago early January. “But I can say this, we need them for economic security.”
