Proof That Green Is The Perfect Transitional Nail Color

Megan Decker

Of all the colors to choose at the nail salon, shades of green are likely to be low on your list — but that might be changing soon. We're only days into March, but we've already seen a steady influx of wearable, super-flattering shades of pistachio, emerald, and chartreuse in the form of velvet headbands and Meghan Markle's latest ensemble. That means it's just a matter of time before green makes its way into trending manicures.

"Greens are alway in for spring," says editorial nail artist Betina Goldstein. "I've been using a bright, almost pistachio green a lot because it's fresh and unexpected. I also love a deep moss that almost looks black on the nail — it's a very chic way to wear green."

Ahead, we talked to Goldstein and a few other trusted nail pros, who shared their favorite green shades. From earthy grass to pastel mint, scroll through their guide to find your new favorite bottle of green — a fashion-forward investment ahead of St. Patrick's Day.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

J.Hannah Nail Polish in Eames

NYC fashion girls are obsessed with jewelry brand J.Hannah's gold signet rings, especially when styled with the brand's similarly chic collection of nail polish. This mossy green shade is J.Hannah's most popular lacquer for good reasons: As nail pro Nadine Abramcyk tells us, "It's the most stylish golden green color I've ever seen in a polish."

Chanel Nail Polish in Fiction

If you're looking for a deep, rich green, Chanel's Fiction is an easy pick. "In the seasonal transition, we're loving a deep green, borderline-black manicure," says Olive & June founder Sarah Gibson Tuttle. "This is one of my personal favorites because the gem-like tones come through, giving the nails an unexpected pop when the light hits your fingers."

Tenoverten Nail Polish in Liberty

Tenoverten, one of our favorite clean nail-care brands, is shoppable at Target. Though every single polish is chic and wearable, this fresh seafoam green is one of the most flattering shades, Abramcyk tells us. "Liberty is a green with cool blue undertones, which makes it a soft color that looks great on every skin tone."

Nails Inc. NailKale Nail Polish in Bruton Mews

Unlike the $17 kale salad you wish you could order for lunch every day, this deep green is a longer-lasting investment. "If you're looking for an army green polish, this is the chicest bottle out there," Tuttle tells us.

If you prefer your green to go on sheer, Lauren B's pale sage hue is a timeless choice. "This shade is so soft and muted, " says celebrity manicurist Skyy Hadley. "It completely transcends seasons, and is perfect for spring or summer," she says.
