Police said the driver hit another car before slamming his vehicle into the building in Garland, Texas, per local news reports

A grandmother has died after a car crashed into her Garland, Texas, apartment building on Tuesday.

Police said a man was driving a Buick LeSabre near Fieldcrest Drive and Jupiter Road after 9 a.m. local time when he lost control of the vehicle during what may have been a suspected medical episode, according to The Dallas Morning News and ABC affiliate WFAA-TV.

The driver hit another car before continuing through the complex’s entrance and slamming into the building in the 1700 block of North Jupiter Road, the Morning News and NBC affiliate KXAS-TV reported.

Plautila Aguirre, 71, was inside the first-floor apartment hit by the Buick, per the reports. She was transported to a local hospital, where she later died.

The Garland Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Elda Deleon, Aguirre’s daughter, described her mother to KXAS-TV as a “sweet person” who always had “a lot of friends.”

“It’s hard. Really hard because nobody is ready for this day,” Deleon said. She later added, “Wherever [Aguirre is] at, wherever she goes, she has a smile for everybody, she tries to help everybody.”

Aguirre’s neighbor, meanwhile, told WFAA that “it sounded like an airplane crashing” when the collision occurred. “I just knew it was the loudest sound I've ever heard," added Jamey Fritts, who lives in the apartment next door.

Fritts said the “whole car” was lodged “fully inside the apartment” after the crash.

The Buick driver, who has not been publicly identified, was hospitalized with minor injuries, per the reports. He has reportedly been cooperating with police, who do not expect to press criminal charges.
