Grand Princess Cruise Ship Docks in Oakland, California

The Grand Princess cruise ship, carrying at least 21 passengers who have tested positive for the new coronavirus, docked at the Port of Oakland, California, on March 9.

The ship, carrying more than 3,500 passengers and originally en route to Hawaii from San Francisco, had been sailing off of the coast of northern California since Wednesday, March 4, as coronavirus tests were administered to passengers and crew members exhibiting flu symptoms.

People testing positive for the virus would be quarantined for at least two weeks following the Oakland disembarkment, according to ABC.

A State of California press release indicated that the Port of Oakland was chosen as the site for the Grand Princess’ disembarkation due to its location and size, which was “the easiest to seal off, securely move passengers toward their isolation destinations and protect the safety of the public.”
