Graeme Souness has backed Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur to qualify for the Champions League as he has predicted who will finish in the top four.
Prior to this season, it was expected that Liverpool would once again challenge Man City for the Premier League title.
This is not proving to be the case as Liverpool are arguably already out of the title race.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have only won five of their first 13 league games and this form leaves them 15 points adrift of league leaders Arsenal.
Liverpool’s aim now is just to finish in the top four. They have closed the gap on their rivals in recent weeks as now seven points separate them and fourth-placed Tottenham.
Newcastle United are proving to be a surprise contender to qualify for the Champions League this term.
Eddie Howe’s side have been a breath of fresh air this season as they have only lost once in 13 games.
Their squad is not as strong as their rivals though so it is expected that they will drop out of contention eventually.
Souness does not think Newcastle, Chelsea or Man Utd will end up in the top four.
He has also suggested that Chelsea’s chances could be determined by the business they do in January.
“I think both of them will be in the top four,” Souness stated on talkSPORT when asked where Liverpool and Tottenham will finish this season.
“I think Chelsea are in jeopardy, a lot depends on what they do in the transfer window. Arsenal are looking convincing at the moment, they look like a really good team. But I think everyone is playing for second place this season.
“So that’s my top four prediction. Tottenham will continue to win games the way they’re playing.
“Antonio Conte did remarkably well to get them fourth last season. He’s a vastly experienced manager who knows what he’s doing.
“If he’s going down the route of being pragmatic, you have to believe in him, that would be my message to the Tottenham fans.
“You’ve got a guy there who knows what he’s doing. I think he’s the right man for the job and will do well at Spurs.”
Souness’ Sky Sports colleague – Gary Neville – also thinks Arsenal will finish in the top four this season.
“We have 25 matches left in the season, with the massive disruption of the World Cup, but I do see Arsenal getting in the top four this season,” Neville said on The Overlap.
“If Arsenal lose a couple games and the teams below you win those games, the pressure now ramps up and that is when we’ll find out if Arsenal can handle the pressure.”
