In the least surprising news since you realized your bestie was the one moving the Ouija board planchette, Hulu has announced that Pen15 is renewed for a second season! The Hulu original was created by comedic geniuses Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle, who star in the show as themselves in middle school…braces, bowl cuts, and all. It’s a terrifyingly accurate look at what it was like to be a preteen when Limited Too reigned supreme. If you haven’t watched Pen15 yet, you’re missing out on one of the best TV moments of the whole year.
You’re probably still recovering emotionally from the episode where Maya gets labeled as the school’s “UGIS,” so to save your brain from resurfacing all your junior high traumas, let’s just focus on facts we already know about the second season.
We have a premiere date!!
And thank god for that. Season 2 of Pen15 will drop September 18.
And we have a trailer!
Yes, it somehow looks even more cringey than the first season, which I personally thought was impossible. But here we are!
This season will be longer than the first.
Season 2 will be 14 episodes, which is super exciting because that means we get 4 more episodes than we did last time! Although a 10-episode season made it really easy to binge the whole thing in one sitting, I’ll gladly spend an additional two hours on the couch if it means more Pen15. The catch, though, is that only the first seven episodes of this season will be released in September. The rest are being held until 2021.
Anna and Maya will still be in seventh grade.
Maya also mentioned that the whole point of Pen15 is to highlight the experience of seventh grade…not to watch the girls grow up and head to high school.
“We’re hoping to keep the show about Anna and [me] in seventh grade forever. That’s what the whole concept of the show is about.”
Cool-cool. If you’re worried that things might get stale…don’t. Maya said the duo has tons of ideas because they’ve literally been planning Pen15 for six years.
And the content might be “darker” this season.
But still funny! Don’t worry. Maya told EW, “We’re going to explore more mature, darker content in the second season. The girls will possibly experiment more. I mean darker like maybe we’ll have the girls experiment more sexually and go into more R-rated things! Anna’s parents just got divorced, so seeing how that plays out would be interesting. Maya still has a secret from Anna about [having her first] period. How will that be revealed?”
This post will be updated as more season 2 information is available.
