KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 — Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba today confirmed the government has received extra doses of the Covid-19 vaccines from several makers procured following negotiations last year.

He said the amount is nearly 60 per cent of the doses negotiated for.

“This morning I signed the agreement to obtain 20 per cent more of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine.

“We have also secured another 12 million doses of the Sinovac vaccine — the one which is made in our country,” he said in a joint press conference with Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

As a result of this development, Khairy said the government can now scrap prior plans to reserve an additional dose per individual (who has received their vaccine) from earlier vaccine batches.

“That policy was in place to mitigate delays in delivery (of vaccines),” he added.

The first phase of the vaccination programme began on February 23 with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Meanwhile, Dr Adham clarified that the three deaths that were recorded recently had nothing to with Covid-19 vaccines.

This, according to both ministers, was confirmed by the post-mortems on all three deceased.

“The three deaths, from reports received, one was due to cardiogenic shock secondary to congestive heart failure; the second was due to acute coronary syndrome; and the third was related to coronary artery disease,” he said.

He emphasised that, to date, there have been no deaths in the country linked to the Covid-19 vaccination.
