Gossip Girl stars Penn Badgley and Chase Crawford have opened up about why they struggle to watch themselves in old episodes of the show.
Speaking to each other via video call for Variety's Actors on Actors issue, the pair discussed the differences between their characters – which are a far cry from the recent darker roles in their careers.
Badgley’s Dan Humphrey was a member of the Brooklyn literati, while Crawford’s Nate Archibald was a Manhattan socialite. Now, Badgley plays a bookseller serial killer in Netflix's You, and Crawford plays a sleazy Aquaman-type superhero in Amazon Prime Video's The Boys.
And the actors agreed that they now find it too "uncomfortable" to look back on their younger selves in old episodes of Gossip Girl.
Asked by Badgley if he'd watched back any episodes of the series lately, Crawford replied: "Buddy, you have to strap me to a gurney and pop my eyes open like Clockwork Orange. But no, it would be interesting to see the first couple maybe."
Badgley then added: "I know that I watched with my wife, with Domino [Kirke], before we got married. It must've been six months after we met. She had never seen it, and that's the last time I can remember seeing an episode.
"I remember even then, it has nothing to do with the show, but it was very hard to watch. These snapshots of yourself when you’re 20, 21, 22 years old. Who can enjoy that? Sometimes it's just uncomfortable."
Gossip Girl is now set to get a modern-day revamp with a brand new cast, although its release has been pushed back to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
