Google has committed to an investment of RM9.4 billion to house its first Google data centre and Google Cloud region in Malaysia.

This latest commitment adds to the list of other billion-ringgit investments in the Southeast Asian nation pledged by tech giants in recent weeks.

The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry said the commitment will support 26,500 jobs across various sectors in Malaysia – including healthcare, education, and finance – with a total economic impact valued at RM15.04 billion.

The increased capacity of the cloud services will support various sectors, including healthcare, education, and finance. Google’s hub will be based at Sime Darby Property’s Elmina Business Park in Shah Alam.

The Google data centre will power Google’s popular digital services, such as Search, Maps, and Workspace. It will also enable Google to deliver the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) to users across the country.

When operational, Malaysia will join the 11 countries where Google has built and currently operates data centres to serve users worldwide.

The Google Cloud region, meanwhile, will deliver high-performance and low-latency cloud infrastructure, analytics, and AI services to large enterprises, start-ups, and the public sector.

According to Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, RM144.7 billion of digital investments in Malaysia had been approved from 2021 to 2023.

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced it will invest US$2.2 billion over the next four years in Malaysia. Yesterday, Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, met with representatives from Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Putrajaya, where he was briefed on the progress of AWS’s RM25.5 billion investment in the country that was announced last year.
