The Good Doctor first bowed in 2017, and stars Highmore as autistic surgeon Shaun Murphy, who overcomes personal and professional hurdles while working at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital.

The Season 6 finale concluded with the birth of Shaun and Lea’s son, Steve Aaron Murphy — named after Shaun’s late brother Steve and his surrogate father, Dr. Aaron Glassman. However, Glassman, still upset with Shaun for accelerating the end of his career as a neurosurgeon, opted to skip the first family photo.

Meanwhile, Drs. Alex Park (Will Yun Lee) and Morgan Reznick (Fiona Gubelmann) resumed their relationship with the intention of raising Morgan’s foster child Eden together.

In tandem with the announcement that The Good Doctor will end with Season 7, ABC released a farewell promo (see above). It contains highlights from the previous six seasons and culminates in a first look at one of the medical drama’s very last episodes.

In the scene, Shaun prepares to leave for work and tells new mom Lea and their infant son Steve that he is going to miss them.

TVLine can confirm that Brandon Larracuente, who played Dr. Danny Perez in Season 6, will not be returning to The Good Doctor for Season 7.

In the Season 6 finale, Danny suffered extensive internal injuries in an ambulance crash. In the aftermath, Dr. Jordan Allen (Bria Samoné Henderson) made the difficult choice to forgo the recovering addict’s wishes. She gave him fentanyl to prevent a fatal cardiac arrest, saving his life but effectively ending their budding romance.

Danny agreed that Jordan made the right call, but he also feared a potential relapse. Alas, he made the decision to leave San Jose and return to Texas to be close to his family, bringing Larracuente’s one-season stint as a series regular to a close.

Larracuente has already booked a leading role in Dick Wolf’s forthcoming Prime Video drama On Call, starring opposite Pretty Little Liars alum Troian Bellisario.

Hill Harper Is Leaving The Good Doctor Season 7

As TVLine exclusively reported in November, Hill Harper (aka Dr. Marcus Andrews) has exited The Good Doctor ahead of Season 7, amid his real-life bid for the United States Senate.

“Hill Harper feels strongly that there is a crisis in American democracy — too often, government only works for the rich and powerful while the rest of us struggle to find a voice,” Harper’s campaign spokesperson previously told TVLine. “Hill is dedicating his efforts full time to fixing that, and he’s running for the U.S. Senate as an active union member to give working people more of a voice in Congress.”

Harper was one of four remaining series regulars from The Good Doctor Season 1, including leading man Freddie Highmore, Richard Schiff and Chuku Modu. In the Season 6 finale, his character, Dr. Andrews, resigned as St. Bonaventure president, paving the way for Harper’s exit.

TVLine was first to confirm that The Good Doctor has elevated Chuku Modu to series regular for the upcoming Season 7, where he’ll reprise his role as Dr. Jared Kalu.

Modu was a cast member when the ABC medical drama first premiered in 2017. Initially, Jared worked under Dr. Melendez (former series regular Nicholas Gonzalez), alongside fellow residents Shaun and Claire (fellow former cast member Antonia Thomas). Jared and Claire even dated for a while, but broke up toward the end of Season 1.

Jared lost his job at St. Bons after he physically assaulted surgical attending Dr. Coyle, who’d previously harassed Claire. He was written out following the Season 2 premiere, at which point Jared left San Jose to continue his residency, off screen, in Denver.

Modu returned to The Good Doctor midway through Season 6. After a four-year absence, it was revealed that Jared forfeited his residency at Denver Memorial to become a concierge doctor — a decision he would come to regret after being back at St. Bons. He eventually agreed to restart the program as a first year, and now works under Shaun.

Kayla Cromer (Everything’s Gonna Be Okay) will recur as Charlene “Charlie” Lukaitis, “a third-year medical student who’s excited both for this rotation and the chance to work with her hero, Dr. Shaun Murphy,” according to the official character breakdown. “Like Shaun, she has Autism Spectrum Disorder, and she has idolized him since she first saw the viral video of him saving a boy’s life at the San Jose airport. Empowered and energetic, her passion for surgery may only be matched by her love for Taylor Swift.”

Wavyy Jonez (Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G.) will recur as fellow third year Dominick “Dom” Hubank. The character is described as “a gentle giant who was hoping this surgical rotation was just a box to check on his way to become the family doctor in his underserved community. But this former football player learns he isn’t as tough as he appears when he faints at the sight of blood. Too big to fail, Dom must overcome his newly discovered hemophobia, and will need his peer and friend Charlie to do so.”

Both characters will make their debut in Season 7, Episode 2.

Is ABC Moving Forward With The Good Lawyer Spinoff?

The Good Lawyer has been disbarred. The Good Doctor spinoff was passed over by ABC in November and will not receive a series order.

The decision came eight months after ABC aired a backdoor pilot starring Kennedy McMann (Nancy Drew). Written by David Shore and Liz Friedman, the backdoor pilot for The Good Lawyer introduced Freddie Highmore’s Dr. Shaun Murphy to McMann’s Joni DeGroot, an aspiring attorney whose struggles with obsessive compulsive disorder kept her from practicing law. But after being sued for malpractice, Shaun enlisted Joni’s services to clear his name — and that she did, with an assist from her own, Glassman-like mentor Janet (portrayed by Desperate Housewives alum Felicity Huffman).

The hour earned a TVLine reader grade of “A-,” while 90 percent of readers voted in favor of a series pickup. Alas, ABC opted against moving forward. As a result, the Good Doctor franchise will end with the conclusion of The Good Doctor Season 7 this spring.
