'The Good Doctor' Fans Think They Found a Continuity Error in Morgan's Mom's Post-Surgery Scene

From Good Housekeeping

Fans of The Good Doctor were surprised on Monday night when a new, never-before-seen character came into play: Morgan's mom, Caroline Reznick. Played by Annette O'Toole, Caroline was revealed to be a famous artist struggling with cerebral cavernous malformations (a.k.a. enlarged groups of blood vessels in the brain), and she underwent two brain surgeries during the episode.

Viewers were abuzz about the episode on Twitter, where they praised the show's writers for continuing to tell Morgan's story with such nuance and applauded actress Fiona Gubelmann (who plays Morgan) for her heart-wrenching performance. But several fans also called out what they believed to be a continuity error: After two brain surgeries, Caroline seemed to still have all of her hair.

"Morgan's mom just had skull surgery, but yet she has all of her hair and no staples?" one fan tweeted. "Morgan's mother has had brain surgery twice and still has her hair?" another wrote.

These are fair questions. But did The Good Doctor really make a mistake by showing Caroline with a full head of hair following her surgeries?

While it's unclear exactly what Caroline's first procedure was, it's possible that for that specific type of brain surgery, only a small area of her head had to be shaved, which she then was able to strategically cover up with the rest of her hair. But because this was never fully explained in the show, we can't know for sure.

Caroline's second surgery, however — at Morgan's suggestion — was a procedure called "stereotactic laser ablation," or SLA. And according to Children's Wisconsin, SLA procedures are minimally invasive: They require only a 3 to 4 millimeter incision to be made, and as a result do not require the patient's head to be shaved. As it turns out, having a seemingly untouched head of hair after this type of operation isn't out of the question.

So there you have it: Caroline's hair post-surgery might not have been an editing mistake after all.
