The Good Doctor spoilers for the season 3 finale follow.

Following the dramatic events of The Good Doctor's season three finale, which featured a tragic exit, it has been confirmed that a second regular character has left the show.

TVLine reports that Dr Carly Lever, played by Jasika Nicole, will not be back as a regular character for season four of the ABC medical drama.

Pathologist Carly hasn't actually been seen on screen for a few weeks, since she and central character Dr Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) discussed the end of their relationship in 'Autopsy'.

But executive producer David Shore has suggested that it isn't necessarily a permanent exit for Carly, saying that there is capacity to bring her back one day.

"I would love to have her back here and there," he said. "I love Jasika, and would love to see her on the show, but it will not be in the same capacity."

Carly has been on the show since its second episode 'Mount Rushmore' in 2017. She first appeared as a recurring character, but was promoted to a series regular for season three as she began a relationship with Shaun.

But towards the end of the season, Carly broke off the relationship after realising that he was still in love with Lea Dilallo (Paige Spara).

Another character who recently exited The Good Doctor – but who definitely won't be back – is Dr Neil Melendez, who sadly died of septic shock in the season three finale after sustaining injuries during an earthquake.

Actor Nicholas Gonzalez, who had played Neil since the show began, recently said that he felt the character had more to say.

"Part of me is sad to see a character I respected a lot go, someone I felt that still had a lot more to say but there wasn't always that opportunity, and I feel like we really built a beautiful world around that character, as much as can be in a show like ours where we're still a procedural as well," he said.

The Good Doctor season 3 airs on ABC in the US. The show airs on Sky Witness and NOW TV in the UK.
