Vin Diesel's unscripted exchange with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson at the 2025 Golden Globes came as quite the fast and furious surprise to those behind the scenes.

In attendance to present the award for cinematic and box office achievement, Diesel went viral during the glitzy Jan. 5 ceremony after he greeted Johnson, also a presenter that evening, from the stage following a decades-long feud. It was a simple and cordial exchange, yet still much-buzzed about: "Hey, Dwayne," to which Johnson returned a smile.

In a postmortem with Variety, Globes executive producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner reacted to the exchange, revealing that there was a moment where producers actually wondered if beef was about to unfold on-air. “It kind of keeps you gripped, and even you in the press room, us in the truck, are going, ‘Wait, what? What’s happening?'” recalled Weiss.

"At that point, there’s a live event taking place, and our job is to bring it to you and let you decipher it," added Weiss. "What is the exchange going on between them? I think it’s really important to show what’s happening in the room.”

Diesel and Johnson famously made amends in 2023 following a decades-long feud that first became public in 2016, after the Rock praised his female Fast and Furious costars but made pointed comments about an unnamed unprofessional male costar later revealed to be Diesel. Several loaded back-and-forth comments about each other via interviews later, Johnson departed the Fast franchise and said he had no interest in ever returning.

Of course, Johnson did return, starring in the spin-off Hobbs & Shaw and surprising fans in Fast X in a mid-credits scene. He's also set to reprise his role in a new Fast film, described as a continuation of Fast X that will serve as a bridge into Fast X: Part II.

As for that other buzzed-about exchange involving Sofia Vergara at the Golden Globes? The producers weren't worried about it. Vergara, nominated for her work on the limited series Griselda, "heckled" Jodie Foster after she was announced as the winner in the best actress in a limited series or TV movie category. Vergara shouted "give me one!" as Foster made her way to the stage.

Kirshner found it playful. “I don’t think there was any moment where I was like, ‘Oh shit, something’s going wrong,'" said the EP.
